Check whether food packages are protruding past the shelves or preventing a drawer from sliding in completely. Also look for heavy frost concentrated near the front edge of the freezer or around the door opening. This pattern often points to an air leak rather than a cooling-system failure.

Inspect the Door Gasket

The gasket is the flexible rubber seal around the freezer door. It should sit flat against the cabinet all the way around, without tears, hard spots, food debris, or sections that have pulled loose from the door.

Try to keep frequently used items together and make sure containers are dry before placing them in the freezer. Warm leftovers should be cooled in the refrigerator first, then transferred in sealed containers. Putting steaming food directly into a freezer adds a significant amount of moisture and can create frost quickly.

It also helps to avoid overpacking. A packed freezer is energy efficient when air can still circulate, but tightly wedged bags and containers can block drawers, interfere with the door, and restrict vents.

Blocked Air Vents Cause Uneven Frost and Temperature Problems

Many modern refrigerators use a fan to move cold air between the freezer and refrigerator compartments. If frozen food is pressed against interior vents, airflow can become restricted. For most household freezers, the recommended temperature is about -18°C. A setting that is substantially colder can contribute to excess frost, especially if there is already a minor door-seal issue. It can also make the appliance run longer than necessary.

Use an appliance thermometer if you are unsure whether the displayed setting matches the actual compartment temperature. The control setting is not always the same as the real temperature, particularly if the freezer is crowded, recently loaded with groceries, or located near a heat source.
